Poor Scoping in Services Procurement

What is it?

A scope of work defines the requirements within a Statement of Work (SOW) contract, including the tasks, deliverables, timelines and milestones for a services project. Because it can be technical and requires careful detail, it’s common for scopes to be rushed, overly brief or left for the supplier to write.

Why is it important?

A clear scope of work establishes shared expectations and gives the project the foundations it needs to succeed. An unclear scope creates confusion, increasing costs, slipping timelines and weakened accountability, resulting in disappointing outcomes.
